“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.”

One of the most important beliefs for the Lord’s people is the idea of the “witness of the Spirit,” as it greatly influences their ability to experience “the peace of God which surpasses all understanding” (Phil. 4:7). Without this assurance, how can they truly have “full assurance of faith” (Heb. 10:22)? Many people, however, do not fully understand what the “witness of the Spirit” means or what kinds of experiences they should anticipate that show this connection to being part of God’s family.
The question of how the Holy Spirit confirms our connection with God is really important. It helps us understand that we are considered children of God and that, with His guidance, we are being prepared for the amazing things He has planned for those who love Him. Many Christians feel confused about what it means to have the Spirit’s witness. Some people are unsure if they truly have it, while others confidently say they do, often pointing to their happy feelings as proof. However, when tough times hit, those feelings can disappear, leaving them questioning their faith. They might wonder where the joy they once felt went, especially when life gets hard and their circumstances change.
Some people can be easily tricked by their emotions. They might feel really happy and think they are getting closer to God, but in reality, they could be falling into temptation without even realizing it. This can lead to surprising moments when they suddenly make mistakes that shock both them and their friends. They trust their feelings too much, thinking they are safe, and that makes them vulnerable to temptation, especially when they feel “happy in the Lord.” On the other hand, there are Christians who understand that feelings can be misleading. They might think that God has not given them any clear signs of His love or acceptance, which can make them feel lost and unsure about their place in His family.
Many people feel uncertain about their faith because they misunderstand the idea of election. While it’s true that their changing emotions shouldn’t determine if they are truly children of God, some still rely on their feelings. Others think that since the Bible says God will keep them in perfect peace, their sense of peace means they are secure in their faith. However, when they notice that even non-believers seem to have peace, they start to doubt their own assurance. This leads to moments of fear and anxiety, making them worry that they might have upset the Holy Spirit.
Some individuals, who are overly trusting, believe they hear the Spirit speaking to them and feel proud of this connection, even if what they think they heard turns out to be false. On the other hand, more logical Christians find it confusing when their friends claim to have the Spirit’s assurance while they themselves do not feel the same certainty.
The main challenge comes from the mistaken belief that the Spirit is just a person, which leads to confusion about its role. Once we understand that God’s Spirit is any power or influence He chooses to use, it becomes easier to recognize what the “witness of the Spirit” really means. This understanding is a blessing for those who feel this witness, as well as for those who don’t, because it helps them realize what they need to do to receive it. Without this witness, no one can truly consider themselves a child of God in good standing.
For those who do have the true witness, there is immense joy and peace. They experience happiness even in tough times, find light in darkness, and gain comfort during hardships. The Bible provides clear guidance on this topic, as it does for many others. Through its teachings, God’s Spirit connects with our spirits, helping us understand our experiences better.
To understand the Spirit’s witness, we can look at a person’s words and actions, which reflect their thoughts and feelings. Similarly, we can learn about God’s Spirit through His words and how He interacts with us. The Bible tells us that anyone who comes to God with faith and a desire to change their ways through Jesus will be accepted. So, if someone is trying to feel the Spirit’s witness about being a child of God, they should ask themselves if they have ever felt drawn to Christ, recognizing Him as their Savior who allows them to connect with God. If they can say yes to that, the next thing to consider is whether they have truly dedicated their entire life, including their time, talents, and influence, to God.
When someone asks if they are accepted by God, they can feel confident if they truly believe in Jesus and want to follow His will. If they look into their hearts and see that they still trust in Jesus and want to do what God wants, they can let the peace and joy from this connection with God fill their hearts. This belief in God’s grace, based on personal experiences and the unchanging nature of God’s Word, is strong and reliable, unlike feelings that can change. If doubts come up during tough times, they can turn to the Bible for reassurance. If they notice their faith is weakening, they can recognize this and take steps to strengthen it again. It’s important for everyone to affirm that God is true and unchanging, as He remains the same throughout time. Those who have found favor with God can stay in that place as long as they remain loyal and obedient to His commands, which can be summed up in love for both God and others.
Those who follow the right steps can be confident, backed by the Word of God, that they are children of God. During the Gospel age, this means they are part of the true Church, which is connected to Christ, the true vine. The Word of God assures them that they belong to this Church, which is considered Christ’s body. God’s Spirit confirms this to their minds and hearts, encouraging them to stay faithful until the end of their journey. If they continue to follow Christ and take up their cross daily, their temporary membership will eventually become permanent after they complete their path and share in His resurrection.
On the other hand, the Spirit of God also clearly warns that those who are already part of the true Vine can be cut off if they are unfaithful and do not produce the right fruits of love. The Father removes branches that do not bear fruit and prunes those that do, so they can grow even more. This process shows how God interacts with His children, helping them grow and develop spiritually. Experiencing these challenges after becoming part of the Vine is a sign that they are still under Christ’s care. However, if someone does not face these challenges, they may lack the Spirit’s confirmation and should question their standing with God. – Hebrews 12:7
If everyone were truly perfect and could prove it through tests, things would be different. In that case, God would love us for our perfection and being in harmony with Him, and any hardships we faced would mean He was unhappy with us. However, the reality is that we are all imperfect and fall short of what God expects. Our new hearts and transformed minds are what God finds acceptable, but only because of Christ’s sacrifice. We are on a journey of growth and testing, and as we recognize both God’s greatness and our own flaws, we can better understand the important lessons we need to learn and why we must go through tough experiences to become more like Him.
The Scriptures tell us that God is building a wonderful spiritual Temple where people can find peace and connection with Him. This Temple’s design is perfectly shown in Jesus Christ, who is the main stone that holds everything together. To be part of this Temple as “living stones,” we need to align ourselves with Christ, who is the foundation. However, we often notice our own flaws and how we don’t fit the beautiful design of the Temple. To be ready for our place in this Temple, we must go through a process of being shaped and refined, which can be tough. If we aren’t experiencing challenges or difficulties, it might mean that we aren’t being prepared as part of God’s Temple, since even Jesus faced hardships. We should realize that our situation should lead us to turn to the Lord and ask why we might not be facing any challenges or difficulties. It’s important to reflect on whether we are still strong in our faith and if we are truly trying to follow the example of our Master while fully committing to God’s will. If we do experience hardships, we should accept them with patience and joy, seeing them as signs of our Father’s love that help us reach our important goals. This aligns with the belief that we are children of God and heirs alongside Jesus Christ, but only if we are willing to endure suffering with Him so that we can share in His glory.
Each person who claims to be a follower of the Lord should take a moment to reflect on whether they feel the “witness of the Spirit” confirming their status as a child of God. It’s important to do this self-examination regularly to stay connected to God’s love and to find joy in the Spirit’s assurance.
Are we constantly being shaped and improved? Are we experiencing situations, big or small, that help us shed negative traits like anger, jealousy, and selfishness, which go against the spirit of love? If we notice this positive change happening in our lives, it shows that we are growing in qualities like kindness, patience, and love. Those who can see this transformation in themselves can be confident in their relationship with God, as they have the Spirit’s confirmation of their acceptance.
Moreover, the Spirit assures us that “Whosoever is born of God, sinneth not.” While we might struggle with our old habits, we won’t intentionally break God’s laws. If we find joy in following God’s will and would rather see His plans succeed, even if it means sacrificing our own desires, then we can be sure that our hearts align with the Spirit’s truth. This not only confirms that we were once welcomed into God’s family but also that we remain a part of it.
The Spirit shows us through the Bible that those who belong to the Lord are different from the rest of the world. Their hopes, goals, and attitudes set them apart. As it says in John 15:19, if we were part of the world, it would accept us, but since we are not, we may face hatred instead. Similarly, 2 Timothy 3:12 reminds us that anyone who lives a godly life in Christ will face challenges. We should ask ourselves if we can relate to these experiences. If we can, it means that God’s Spirit is confirming that we belong to Him. It’s important to remember that the “world” includes those who are focused on worldly things, and often, the most significant opposition can come from those who claim to be religious. In Jesus’ time, many of His challenges came from the religious leaders, who even called Him names. This shows that if we face criticism for following the truth, it can be a sign that we are on the right path.
If Jesus had chosen to align himself with the popular leaders of the Jewish Church and avoided sharing the truth, he likely wouldn’t have faced hatred or persecution. Instead, he might have been well-respected by people. However, he pointed out that what is often admired by people can be detestable to God, as mentioned in Luke 16:15. If he had stayed silent about the false teachings and hypocrisy of the Scribes and Pharisees, they probably would have left him alone, and he wouldn’t have suffered for standing up for the truth. The same goes for his followers today; those who embrace the truth and let their light shine may also face hatred and persecution. Yet, if they endure these challenges while trying to speak the truth in love, they are blessed, as the Apostle noted that the Spirit of glory and God rests upon them, affirming their commitment to the difficult path they have chosen, as stated in 1 Peter 4:14.
The Holy Spirit reminds us that anyone who feels embarrassed about Jesus and the truth he shared will find that Jesus will also be embarrassed by them when he returns. Those who truly love the Lord and his teachings will proudly acknowledge him as their Savior and share his message whenever they can. This shows that they are children of God and will be welcomed by Jesus before God and the angels. However, if someone feels ashamed to be known as a follower of Christ or to support his teachings, they should be aware that this could lead to Jesus not acknowledging them when he comes back.
Additionally, the Holy Spirit tells us that anyone born of God can overcome the world, and this victory comes through faith. We should take a moment to reflect on our own hearts and minds to see if we truly fit this description of being overcomers. To belong to the Lord means we must stand apart from the world and its desires, which often include selfishness and pride. It’s clear that you can’t truly overcome the world if you are still aligned with its values and ambitions.
To truly understand if we are overcoming the world, we need to realize that it’s not about flattering others or getting involved in worldly activities while trying to make them seem religious. Simply doing good deeds, like teaching Sunday school or helping those in need, doesn’t guarantee victory over the world either. The key to overcoming lies in our faith, as the Lord clearly states. We should focus on what is unseen, like spiritual truths, rather than getting caught up in things like popularity or church status.
Moreover, the Holy Spirit guides us through the Scriptures, ensuring that as children of God, we are aware of both present and future matters. As we grow in our faith, we should seek deeper understanding beyond the basics of the Word. This growth involves developing qualities like faith, patience, and love, which will strengthen our relationship with God and Jesus. As we mature, we will gain clearer insights into God’s plans and character, allowing us to connect with Him on a deeper level.
The Apostle Peter emphasizes that if we possess and nurture certain qualities, we will be fruitful in our understanding of Jesus Christ. He warns that those who lack these qualities are spiritually blind and unable to see the bigger picture. Peter assures us that by practicing these virtues, we can secure our place in the everlasting kingdom of Jesus.
It’s important for each person to reflect on whether they feel the Spirit’s presence and if they are growing as a new creation in Christ. Our love and the fruits of the Spirit grow as we deepen our knowledge, and this knowledge also flourishes as we develop these fruits. Each new understanding leads to more responsibilities, and fulfilling these responsibilities will open the door to even greater knowledge. If we recognize this growth in ourselves, we should celebrate it and continue on this journey, trusting that it will lead us to perfection in both knowledge and grace.
